Ghanaian lawmaker Mavis Hawa Koomson has justified her actions after she fired several shots in the air at registration centres at Awutu Senya East Constituency where she represents the people in parliament.

Mavis Hawa Koomson said she forced to go to that extent after she realized that some NDC members in the area where engaging in illegalities as far as the registration is concerned. According to her, these NDC thugs have bused several people to the area to take part in the registration process which is illegal. She also added that these same people were intimidating those around so she did the ‘needful’ by ‘defending’ herself.
“Please I cannot tell you the kind of gun I use. What you should be asking is why I fired warning shots at the Registration Center. I cannot keep a gun which is not licensed in my possession. I won’t mention the kind of gun but I can tell you that it’s a licensed gun”.
I’m a member of Parliament so if I’m moving and I’ve in my possession my firearm because you don’t know who can cause harm to you…or is it because I’m a woman? My Police escort was not with me. I woke up at dawn so my Police escort was not with me. So if I go somewhere and my Police is not with me, I keep my gun to protect myself.

When I went to the Polling station, I told the crowd gathered that people who do not reside in Kasoa should not venture to register for the card and I left. So after leaving for 20 minutes Koryo brought his boys including some macho men to display but I wasn’t bothered so after they did what they wanted to do, they left the place. So after they finished and left, I also moved from there to step to christ registration centre to see if the people he brought from Nsawam and other areas to register were allowed to register or not. If they were registering I would stop the process. So when I got there they brought the motors back and sensing danger, I fired warning shots to scare them,” she told the media.
