Following a year-long process, the National Film Authority (NFA) declared ‘Black Star Films’ as the new name of the movie business on Wednesday, December 8. According to the Authority, the change of name for the film industry is based on the concept that having an identity as an industry is very vital.

This, they added is expected to ensure that efforts being put into building solid structures will have a cutting-edge advantage.

According to George Quaye, the ‘Black Star Films’ are strikingly similar to the ‘Black Star International Film Festival’ (BSIFF), which was founded by Juliet Asante, Executive Secretary of the National Film Authority.

The petitioners stated that the idea to rename the Ghana Movie Industry after the BSIFF creates a Conflict of Interest and morally questionable situation.

This is wrong and must be condemned by all well-meaning Industry players with all the contempt it deserves,” the host of Showbiz A-Z on Joy FM wrote.

He claims the industry does not require renaming because it has always been legally registered as the Ghana Film Industry and is properly documented in all existing documentation.

George Quaye stated that if the NFA wants the industry to have a moniker other than Ghana Film Industry, it should do it collaboratively to come up with a name that does not secretly hand over the Ghanaian Film Industry to one person.

“We, the undersigned are by this petition imploring the offices of the Honourable Minister for Tourism, Arts and Culture and his able Deputy and other bodies and agencies mandated to see to the concerns of the Ghanaian Film Industry to help right this wrong,” he said.

George Quaye’s submissions come shortly after the actor cum movie producer, Eddie Nartey questioned the committee if they had no idea about the already-existing Black Stars Film Festival.
