The Ghana Medical Association has pleaded with President, H.E Nana Addo Danquah Akuffo-Addo to turn a blind eye to the call from religious leaders and other entities to lift ban on social gatherings.

It is surprising to see religious leaders calling for the ban on social gatherings be lifted during these times, something that can endanger the lives of their congregation, should one infected person attend church service. It is sad that they have put their selfish gains before the life of their members.

Most of the religious bodies have appealed to the government to lift the ban on social gatherings. They have presented proposal to the government to spell out the modalities which they are ready to follow in order not to put the lives of the congregrants in danger.

According to Ghanaweb, the churches claim to be ready to adhere to all rules and regulations, observe safety protocols by washing hands before and after leaving the church and proper seating arrangements ie 2 metres apart from each other as required by law.

The GMA objects to all proposals made by the various pressure groups and religious bodies to lift the ban on social gatherings. According to them, coronavirus is very real and still hovering on our heads. They believe that the ban on social gatherings and borders are the only sure way we can prevent community spread and importation of the virus.

According to the GMA the sudden hike in numbers is from community spread which is as a result of the the people’s failure to observe safety protocols hence their petition to government, not to lift ban nor open borders.

They advised the government to put the safety of the frontline workers before anything by providing them with all the necessary equipments to help ease the pressure on the job.

Quote;

“Government must ensure prompt and continuous distribution of PPEs to all health workers at their various institutions (or place of work) at all times. This will guarantee the safety of all health workers as they continue to render care to patients.”

Ghana Health Service, reports that Ghana has recorded 4,263 cases, 378 recoveries and 22 deaths. Accra still remains the epicentre with a total of 3,641 cases, followed by Kumasi which has 252 confirmed cases.

All of this could have been prevented from the scratch if government had locked down the country when the first case was recorded but here we are…. Well, we pray we survive this, please stay home and stay safe, wash your hands and mask up wherever you go.
