The Information Minister Kojo Oppong Nkrumah has clarified in a press briefing that the Government has not requested not has it received any herbal cure of COVID-19 from Madagascar.

Oppong Nkrumah told Journalists on Monday 21st May, 2020 at a press briefing that Madagascar has reached out to Ghana just as they have done with other countries but haven’t received any “supposed cure” from them.

He said: “…I just want to be clear, the reports that Ghana has requested for or that we have received and we are testing a cure from Madagascar is incorrect, what we have said is that they have reached out to us as they have done to many other countries… What we will do is that we will test it…”.

He disclosed that when the drugs are made available to the country by Madagascar, it will undergo testing to verify if its fit to be ministered on the infected persons.

“What we’ll do is that we’ll test it when it is made available to us. We have said that if, indeed they have a cure, no challenge, they should let us have it and we will see”.

“So please lets be clear, we have not requested for it, neither have we received any” he said.

Madagascar’s ‘cure’ is produced from the artemisia plant – the source of an ingredient used in malaria treatment. It has been credited for Madagascar’s low COVID-19 death toll which currently stands at 2. The country also has 371 total cases.
