He stated that despite the fact the emergence of new genres like dancehall, Afrobeat, afropop and Amapiano, highlife has the potentials to promote Ghana music globally, hence Ghanaians need to embrace the genre.

Speaking in an interview with Jay Foley on the Prime Morning show on JoyPrime, Akwaboah intimated that irrespective of the proliferation of new genre from other countries, Highlife will stand the test of time.

The truth is that highlife is for us; so, no matter the genre that comes, highlife will still st and tall. It’s just a matter of time for us, Ghanaians, to really embrace that fact that highlife is ours”

, he said.

“I’ve been to certain countries that when you play any other song they know and when we start with ‘Amponsah’, they’d be like ‘this is different’. I know this [highlife] is what is going to sell us but it’s just a matter of time,” he added.

Well, this comes at the back of the controversies surrounding the debate on which genre Ghana is known for. Many have argued that Ghana is best known for highlife but industry players and Ghanaians have not done much to promote the genre to the world.

Others are also of the view that due to the proliferation of new genre, the highlife genre has lost its relevance in the music scene, thus it needs to be rekindled.

Some old folks also objected saying that the highlife genre is not dead but still holds its name and power to promote Ghana music just as it did during the era of Daddy Lumba, A.B Crentsil and others.
