Senegalese-American singer, songwriter, record producer, and entrepreneur Aliaune Damala Badara Akon Thiam, known popularly as Akon has said he was much happier when he was poor.

According to the artist, living a life as a rich man is tougher life than being poor. Recall that Akon was lambasted last month for the statement he made in the wake of actor Michael K. Williams’s death. The artist used “Lovecraft Country” stars’ death as proof that the more money some makes, the more problems they accumulate.

In an interview with TMZ at the airport inquiring about his statement he made last month, he said, “Nobody can sit there and tell me, that I didn’t go through poverty,” the 48-year-old began. “I was the young African kid, barefoot and playing soccer in the village with no electricity, no running water, I knew what that looked like – believe me, I know what poverty looks like.”

He continued, “But I also know what success looks like, and from my personal experience, I’m having more problems successfully dealing with all that comes with success than I had when I was poor,” said the star, who was born in St. Louis, Missouri, but raised in Senegalese. “I was actually happier when I was poor.”
