Montgomery was chosen by the New York Yankees with the 122nd overall pick in the fourth round of the 2014 Major League Baseball draft.

Upon signing, he was given a $424,000 signing bonus by the Yankees, and after the college season, the Yankees limited his workload, and he pitched for the Gulf Coast Yankees of the Rookie-level Gulf Coast League and the Staten Island Yankees of the Class A-Short Season New York-Penn League.

He pitched to a 1-1 win–loss record with a 3.79 earned run average (ERA) in 19 innings pitched. Montogomery started the 2015 season as a member of the Class A South Atlantic League’s Charleston RiverDogs.

In June, the Yankees promoted him to the Class A-Advanced Tampa Yankees of the Florida State League.

In August of 2016, Montgomery was assigned to the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders of the Class AAA International League after starting the 2016 season with the Trenton Thunder of the Class AA Eastern League.

Montogomery left the game against the Houston Astros on May 1, 2018, due to an injury he sustained at his elbow. after just one inning. He suffered a flexor strain and was placed on the disabled list the following day, with a six-to eight-week absence.

However, it was revealed on June 5 that Montgomery will have Tommy John surgery to end his season after tearing his ulnar collateral ligament while throwing on flat ground during rehab a few days earlier.

Montogomery returned to the Yankees after he started healing from his surgery from the previous season and he had to begin his campaign on the 60-day injured list.

With three oversights, Montgomery led all AL pitchers in pitching in 2020. He pitched to a 5.11 ERA in 44 innings pitched and recorded 47 strikeouts. Montgomery was 6–7 with a 3.83 ERA in 157+1⁄3 innings in 2021.

In exchange for Harrison Bader, Montogomery was traded by the Yankees to the St. Louis Cardinals on August 2, 2022. Harrison was to be announced later along with the monetary considerations.

On August 6, in a 1-0 Cardinals victory over the Yankees at Busch Stadium, he made his major league debut for the team by pitching five scoreless innings before being lifted due to dehydration-related cramps.

Pitching a one-hit, 99-pitch Maddux against the Chicago Cubs, Montgomery recorded his first career complete game on August 22, 2022.

In order to avoid salary arbitration, Montgomery and the Cardinals reached a $10 million, one-year contract on January 13, 2023. With the Cardinals, he made 21 starts and finished with a 6-9 record and a 3.42 ERA.

The Texas Rangers received John King, Tekoah Roby, and Thomas Saggese from the Cardinals on July 30, 2023, in exchange for Montgomery and Chris Stratton. In remembrance of former teammate CC Sabathia, he donned jersey number 52.
