Born on September 20, 1990, in Mississauga, Ontario, Canada, John Tavares grew up alongside his two siblings sisters Barbara and Laura. He was raised in Oakville Ontario and developed his passion for hockey at a very young age playing for Minor Oaks Hockey Association.

As a lover of sports, he did well in soccer and lacrosse.John Tavares’s ability to play well in hockey was influenced by his uncle John Tavares, who holds the title of the National Lacrosse League’s all-time scoring leader.

During the 2009 NHL Entry Draft, he was selected first overall by the New York Islanders where he played for nine seasons and served as captain for five seasons. He currently plays for the NHL team, Toronto Maple Leafs.Before that, he played at the major junior level as a member of the Oshawa Generals of the Ontario Hockey League (OHL) before being traded to the London Knights at the 2009 OHL trading deadline alongside Michael Del Zotto.

In 2008 and 2009 he won gold medals at the World Junior Ice Hockey Championships.
