The Teranga Lions of Senegal won their first-ever African Cup of Nations (AFCON) tournament on February 6, 2022, during the 2021 edition of the tournament.

The first win came after being to the finals three times and the West Africans won the trophy after beating North African giants, Egypt.

After the win, the President of Senegal, Macky Sall has declared Monday, February 7, as a public holiday and this is to celebrate the win from the national team.

The announcement was made known on national television and according to the broadcast, the president has cut short a trip he was engaged in just to meet the players today and congratulate them.

The President will reportedly meet on their return to Dakar at 1300 GMT on Monday, February 7, and also on Tuesday, February 8, all the players and technical body of the team will be decorated by the President.

The report from the national television station, RTS reads;

“The President of the republic declared Monday a public holiday, a paid day off, following the brilliant victory of the Lions.”
