Lately, telenovelas are being broadcasted on TV including the media house Afia Pokuaa works in, Despite Media. It turns to give them more audience than the local movies.

This foreign content turns to please Ghanaians even more than our local content. The downfall of the Kumawood movie industry was also caused by the emergence of this foreign content which caused many to lose interest in purchasing the local content.

Taking to her Facebook page, Afia Pokuaa stated that the Ghanaian appetite has been westernized due to the introduction and broadcast of this foreign content. She claims that movie producers in the country spend their fortunes to produce local content yet the public would prefer to enjoy telenovelas, leading to the deteriorating of the Ghanaian movie industry.

She wrote; Under the solid direction of President Rawlings and the influence of Nana Konadu Agyeman Rawlings, the state invested and designed programs like ‘By The FireSide’ for tv.Later programs like ‘Kyekyule’ followed while the National Theatre was built to promote creative culture. VIEWERS watched and it become some of the most popular programs on the air.Today, when producers struggle to use their COINS to produce LOCAL programs, they attract fewer viewers compared to the telenovelas because our ‘APPETITE’ has become ‘westernised’.When was the last time you or your child watched a local program🤔🤔🤔( CHECK YOUR TASTE)Even our SPORTS has been dominated by foreign leagues because viewers give it more eyeballs than local sports.A nation that fails to write its own stories will be forced to take the (LGBTQ+) stories of others😳Led by the STATE with ACTIVE PARTICIPATION of VIEWERS, MEDIA, NAFTI, CREATIVE WRITERS and co, we must save the next generation, write our own stories, instead of merely screaming on rooftops.
