Salem gained notoriety for her co-starring parts as the evil witch Belor in the early 1980s ITV children’s fantasy series Into the Labyrinth and as suspicious mafia affiliate Joanne Francis in her late 1980s temporary appearance on the BBC soap opera EastEnders.

Additionally, she starred in two Doctor Who adventures: The Robots of Death (1977) as Toos, and Remembrance of the Daleks (1988) as Professor Rachel Jensen, a role she returned to for the officially sanctioned audio drama spin-off series Counter Measures from Big Finish Productions.

She was also audible in The Face of Evil (1977) as one of Xoanon’s many voices. She had tried out for the part of Leela, the Fourth Doctor’s companion, but Louise Jameson was cast in the part instead.

From 1989 until 1991, Salem also starred in French Fields, a British sitcom, on a recurring basis. Additional television guest appearances include parts in well-known British series like Blake’s 7 (as Kara in “Cygnus Alpha”, 1978), The Onedin Line, The Professionals (episodes “The Female Factor”, 1978, and “Fall Girl”, 1978), Howards’ Way, Ever Decreasing Circles, Tripods, and later episodes of All Creatures Great and Small as Zoe Bennett.

Later on, she played a British prime minister in American series like Magnum, P.I., Party of Five, ER, and The West Wing.

In the ‘unofficial’ 1983 James Bond picture Never Say Never Again, starring Sean Connery, she portrayed Miss Moneypenny.

Along with supporting roles in The Bitch (1979), Night Train to Murder (1983), After Darkness (1985), Thirteen at Dinner (1985), Salome (1986), God’s Outlaw (1987), Succubus (1987), Gods and Monsters (1998), Quicksand (2002), and April’s Shower (2003).

She also starred in Michael Crichton’s The First Great Train Robbery (1979), another movie starring Connery. Additionally, she can be heard in the English version of “Hellsing Ultimate OVA IV” (2008) as the Queen.
