A midwife of the Planned Parenthood Association of Ghana (PPAG), Abigail Okundro Yorke has said that there is a possibility of getting pregnant even after partaking in the family planning methods.

According to the midwife, when the implant or intrauterine device (IUD) inserted in the womb is shifted, there is a possibility of pregnancy. She also shed more light on the several types of family planning and when it’s suitable for a woman to partake in the family planning methods. She added that a woman who has given birth and wants to space her children can go in for family planning after a month and two weeks after birth.

A caller (identity hidden) who called on the health show “Etesen” on Angel FM shared her ordeal and the side effects she experienced after she went for the family planning. According to the lady, she went in for the family planning which had a 5 years duration because she wanted to control her birth space.

However, she discovered that after the family planning she started feeling drowsy, nauseated, and constant headache every morning. The mother of three disclosed that she experienced severe vaginal discharge and how she saw changes in the body and also how she started bloating until she decided to take it out after two and a half years.

Another caller, 50 years, however, shared a different experience with the public. According to her, she did her first family planning when she was 19 years and kept on taking the injection and loop to space up her children. She stated that she has taken the family planning injection for over 20 years and has never experienced any side effects.

Eunice Osei Bonsu, Midwife of PPAG also disclosed that before any woman is taken through any of the family methods, a thorough check-up and education is done. She also advised women having serious complications after taking the devices or the pills for family planning to report to their service providers.

She also encouraged women not to get discouraged about the side effects of family planning because the methods are very helpful.
