Cobb won his first nine kickboxing contests, all by knockout. He defeated the veteran David Ochoa in the first professional kickboxing match, held in El Paso, Texas, in 1975. Cobb was then signed to a contract by boxing guru Paul Clinite.

Cobb made his professional boxing debut in early 1977, knocking out Pedro Vega at El Paso County Coliseum. He went on to win all of his fights for the rest of the year, each by knockout.
