Rishi Sunak is the Prime Minister-designate of the United Kingdom and Leader of the Conservative Party since October 24, 2022. He is a British politician who previously held the positions of Chief Secretary to the Treasury from 2019 to 2020 and Chancellor of the Exchequer from 2020 to 2022.

Rishi Sunak was born on May 12, 1980, in Southampton to Indian immigrants who came to the country in the 1960s from East Africa.

Rishi Sunak succeeded William Hague as the representative for Richmond in North Yorkshire in the House of Commons after the general election of 2015. Rishi Sunak backed Boris Johnson’s bid to lead the Conservative Party after May’s resignation. He was named Chief Secretary to the Treasury by Boris Johnson after he was elected and given the position of Prime Minister. In the cabinet shuffle of February 2020, Sajid Javid resigned as Chancellor of the Exchequer, and Rishi Sunak took his position.

On July 5, 2022, Rishi Sunak resigned as chancellor after controversy surrounding the sexual harassment claims made against Chris Pincher MP, just seconds after Sajid Javid resigned as health secretary. In his letter of resignation, Rishi Sunak wrote, “The public correctly expects the government to be run professionally, competently, and seriously.” Recognizing that this may be my final ministerial position, I am quitting because I feel that these values are important enough to fight for.

Rishi Sunak, Penny Mordaunt, and Boris Johnson, who had resigned as prime minister prior to Liz Truss’s appointment, were considered potential candidates for the shortened leadership election after Liz Truss’ resignation on October 20, 2022. According to a report from the 22nd of October, Rishi Sunak had the necessary support of 100 members of the House of Commons to stand for election on the 24th.

He met his wife, Akshata Murty, the daughter of N. R. Narayana Murthy, the rich Indian businessman who founded Infosys while attending Stanford University. With a combined wealth of £730 million as of 2022, Sunak and Murty rank as the 222nd and 243rd richest individuals in Britain, respectively. His wife Murty is said to be richer than the late queen of England.
