Scott Benton Parents: Meet Alan and Krystina – Scott Lloyd Benton is a Member of Parliament for Blackpool South, representing the Conservative Party, and has held the position since the 2019 United Kingdom general election.

Prior to his election as an MP, Scott Benton was a councillor on the Calderdale Metropolitan Borough Council, where he was at times deputy leader and then leader of the Conservative group.

Benton was elected to Calderdale Metropolitan Borough Council for the Brighouse ward in 2011. During his tenure as a councillor, Benton worked as a Parliamentary assistant for Craig Whittaker, the Conservative MP for Calder Valley.

In the 2017 Northern Ireland Assembly election, Benton ran for Strangford, and in the 2017 general election, he contested and lost in Huddersfield, a safe seat for the Labour Party.

In the 2019 general election, Scott Benton contested and won Blackpool South, achieving a swing of 9.4% and becoming the first Conservative to represent the constituency since 1997. His campaign focused on delivering Brexit and reopening Blackpool Airport for commercial flights.

During the 2019 election campaign, Scott Benton faced criticism from David Brown, who stood for the Brexit Party against Benton, over his links to the anti-abortion organisation Society for the Protection of Unborn Children (SPUC), which has campaigned against same-sex marriage and been accused of homophobia. Benton responded by stating that he was no longer linked to SPUC and supported their anti-abortion stance but was not homophobic and supported same-sex marriage.

In November 2020, Scott Benton was among the signatories of a letter to The Daily Telegraph from the Common Sense Group of Conservative Parliamentarians. The letter accused the National Trust of being “coloured by Cultural Marxism conspiracy theory dogma” following an interim report on the connections between colonialism and properties now in the care of the National Trust, including links with the Atlantic slave trade.

In July 2021, Scott Benton was one of nine MPs from different political parties who accepted tickets to high-profile sporting events as hospitality from betting and gambling companies, receiving tickets to Royal Ascot, two Euro 2020 football games, and Wimbledon.

In January 2021, Benton was found to have broken Parliamentary rules by failing to register six entries in the Register of Members’ Financial Interests within the House’s 28-day deadline for payments received for his work as a Members’ researcher. The Parliamentary commissioner for standards found that he had breached the rules.

On 13 June 2022, Benton was appointed Parliamentary Private Secretary to the Foreign, Commonwealth, and Development Office ministerial team.

On 5 April 2023, journalists from The Times posed as gambling industry investors and offered Benton a paid advisory role. Benton declined the role after consulting with the Commons Registrar and the Parliamentary Standards Commissioner. He then referred himself to the Parliamentary Commissioner for Standards, and the Conservative Party Whip was suspended for the duration of the investigation. No rules appear to have been broken, according to BBC News.

Benton has acknowledged his mistake and apologized for inadvertently breaching the rules. His case is being investigated by the Parliamentary Commissioner for Standards, and the Conservative chief whip has suspended the party whip for the duration of the investigation.

Schools that he has attended in his life include Rastrick High School, and the prestigious University of Nottingham in the United Kingdom.
