On Monday, authorities disclosed that six Mexican policemen were killed and another five injured in gun combat while they were doing security checks in the Southern state of Guerrero.

Guerrero’s state government said that the attack on Sunday on the state police happened in Taxco when the police were carrying out indefinite security checks.

A state security spokesman, Roberto Alvarex informed Milenio TV, “Six elements of the state police lost their lives in these unfortunate events”.

He added a search operation for the gunmen was ongoing.

The state of Guerrero, where the Acapulco tourist resort is located, is one of the areas most affected by the violence associated with drug cartels in Mexico.

In April, the body of the murdered Mexican journalist Viktor Fernando Alvarez was found in Acapulco a week after his disappearance.

Organized crime remains active in Mexico, regardless of its internment due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Human rights specialists and activists attribute the violence the country is experiencing to the controversial military crackdown on organized crime launched in late 2006 by former President Felipe Calderón.

According to official figures, there have been over 287,000 murders in the country, although it is not clear how many cases are related to organized crime.
