Veteran Ghanaian actor, Abeiku Sagoe has taken a swipe at Joy FM’s George Quaye over his petition against the move to rename the Ghana Film Industry to Black Star Films, saying there is nothing solid about his petition.

George Quaye earlier petitioned the Ministry of Arts, Tourism, and Culture to scrap the idea to change the Ghana Film Industry to Black Star Film. According to the petition, the ‘Black Star Films’ bears a striking similarity to the awards and film festival, ‘Black Star International Film Festival’ (BSIFF) founded by the National Film Authority’s Executive Secretary, Juliet Asante.
The petitioners stated that the idea to rename the Ghana Movie Industry after the BSIFF creates a Conflict of Interest and morally questionable situation.
He claims the industry does not require renaming because it has always been legally registered as the Ghana Film Industry and is properly documented in all existing documentation.
George Quaye stated that if the NFA wants the industry to have a moniker other than Ghana Film Industry, it should do it collaboratively to come up with a name that does not secretly hand over the Ghanaian Film Industry to one person.
In reaction to his assertions and rebellion over the new name for the industry, Abeiku Sagoe has stated that there is nothing solid about George Quaye’s submissions. He said that his petition to the ministry is not a strong one.
According to him, there is absolutely nothing wrong with the fact that the new brand name for the movie industry, Black Star Film bears the same name as Juliet Asante’s Black Stars International Film Festival.
Speaking in an interview with Andy Dosty on Daybreak Hitz, Abeiku Sagoe said; “because it is Black Star Films and Juliet has Black Star International Film Festival; is there a problem? There is New York International Independent Film Festival and there’s New York International Film Festival. Has anyone in New York raised any flag that if this is it nobody can name anything New York?”
