President of the Republic, Nana Akufo Addo has petitioned that the University of Development Studies (UDS) should serve as a monument for the late former President Jerry John Rawlings.

He made this known when speaking at the graduation ceremony of UDS over the weekend that J.J. Rawlings deserves to be remembered for his role in establishing the University hence it should be named after him.

The former president who doubles as the ex-military leader played a vital role in the establishment of the institution when he uses money from the World Food Prize of $50,000 to Kickstart the foundation of the school.

The president added that he earlier approached the late former President about the idea of naming the school after him but he declined it.

According to Nana Akufo Addo, Rawlings declined the honor due to his principle not to have national monuments or facilities name after him.

He noted that notwithstanding the late president’s sentiments it’s his strong belief that such an honor should be accorded to him.
