Wendy Williams Hunter born July 18, 1964, is a 58-year-old American broadcaster, media personality, and writer. From 2008 to 2022, she hosted the nationally syndicated television talk show The Wendy Williams Show.

Prior to television, Wendy Williams was a radio DJ and host and quickly became known in New York as a shock jockette. She gained popularity for her on-air spats with celebrities and was the subject of the 2006 VH1 reality television series The Wendy Williams Experience, which broadcast events surrounding her radio show.

Wendy Williams’ other endeavors include authoring several books, appearances in various films and television shows, touring her comedy show, and her own product lines, including a fashion line, a jewelry collection, and a wig line. Wendy Williams was inducted into the National Radio Hall of Fame in 2009. On her 50th birthday, the council of Asbury Park, New Jersey, renamed the street on which she grew up Wendy Williams Way.

Wendy Williams revealed she was date raped at college and by R&B singer Sherrick in the 1980s. In 1991, she had a six-week abortion after breaking up with her boyfriend. She later married her first husband, Bertrand “Bert” Girigorie. She refers to him under a pseudonym in her autobiography and says they separated after five months and divorced about eighteen months later.

Wendy Williams met her second husband, Kevin Hunter, in 1994, and married him on November 30, 1999. She suffered multiple miscarriages before giving birth to their son, Kevin Samuel, on August 18, 2000. In April 2019, she filed for divorce due to irreconcilable differences after Hunter fathered a baby with a mistress. Although the divorce was finalized in January 2020, her legal surname remains Hunter.

Due to her suburban upbringing, Wendy Williams considers herself “a multicultural woman who happens to be Black” and she identifies as Christian but no longer attends church services even though she believes “God is everywhere” and prays “every day, several times a day”. Wendy Williams is pro-choice abortion.

In 2012, she supported Barack Obama in that year’s presidential election and promoted an NAACP voter helpline. That year, Wendy Williams posed for PETA’s “I’d Rather Go Naked Than Wear Fur” campaign, stating “we should all try to be comfortable in our own skin and let the animals keep theirs.” She supported the 2015 removal of the Confederate battle flag from the South Carolina State House.

Wendy Williams has had breast implants since 1994 and has had other cosmetic procedures such as liposuction and botox and has been open about her cocaine addiction in the late 1980s and early 1990s, for which she never received treatment. Since fainting on her talk show in October 2017 due to dehydration, she has shared other health issues publicly.

What happened to Wendy Williams?

Williams suffers from Graves’ disease and hyperthyroidism, which she was diagnosed with in 2003. In 2019, the famous host was also hospitalized due to complications from Graves’ disease. This led to her being absent from the show.

Graves’ disease is an immune system disorder that results in the overproduction of thyroid hormones (hyperthyroidism). Although a number of disorders may result in hyperthyroidism, Graves’ disease is a common cause. Thyroid hormones affect many body systems, so signs and symptoms of Graves’ disease can be wide-ranging.

As a result of her health challenges, her 13 years show, The Wendy Williams Show ended with producers at Debmar-Mercury moving forward with a revamped talk show fronted by Sherri Shepherd. The latter had been a frequent guest host while Williams was on leave.

But Wendy Williams didn’t know that her long-running talk show had been canceled, despite repeated communication that her tenure at the head of the program had come to an end following a months-long back-and-forth over health issues.

Was Wendy Williams’s finances put under guardianship?

Wells Fargo no longer directly controls Wendy Williams’ finances, but she is still under financial guardianship, which means that her finances are controlled by her financial guardian. (A financial guardian, also referred to as a guardian of the estate, is a person who is lawfully entrusted with the responsibility of taking care of the property of someone who is unable to do so because of infancy, incapacity, or disability.)

Wendy Williams was taking precautions to avoid being placed under financial guidance when she granted her son power of attorney but things didn’t work out as she wanted hence a court appointed a new financial guardian for her since Wells Fargo no longer controls her finances directly.

Wendy Williams has been public about suffering from serious medical issues, such as the immune system disorder Graves’ disease, Covid-19, and addiction. In 2019, she also revealed on her talk show that she had been residing in a sober home since her 21-year marriage dissolved due to her husband’s infidelity and the child she had out of wedlock. It’s possible one or more of these medical issues could have served as a reason for guardianship.

Was The Wendy Williams Show Canceled?

Yes, The Wendy Williams Show ultimately concluded on June 17, with Shepherd introducing a highlight reel of moments from the program’s run. “Most of all, we have to thank you, Wendy Williams,” Shepherd said.

The Wendy Williams Show has officially been canceled after 13 seasons after nearly 14 years. The news of her show cancelation came two months after Wendy Williams told Good Morning America that she had plans to return to the show in the near future.

The 13th and final season of her show had been marked by disorder from the start, after her health issues, particularly Grave’s disease, delayed the show’s October 2021 premiere. A new talk show hosted by Sherri Shepherd, “The Sherri Shepherd Show”, has been announced to take over Williams’ time slot.

Wendy Williams started her media career as a New York radio host and “shock jockette,” where she built up a huge following for her radio program and eventual talk show due to her unabashed celebrity digs and pop culture critiques. She has had public feuds with many celebs, most memorably Whitney Houston who called into her radio show and confronted her.
