Major CL Datong, who was kidnapped last month when bandits stormed the Nigerian Defence Academy (NDA) in Kaduna, has been released.
On August 24, 2021, bandits stormed the NDA, murdering two senior officers in the attack.
Colonel Ezindu Idimah, Deputy Director Army Public Relations 1 Division, Nigerian Army, announced Datong’s recovery from the kidnapper’s hideout on Friday night. Idimah claimed that the operation that led to his rescue resulted in the destruction of numerous recognized bandit camps in the state’s Afaka-Birnin Gwari districts.
During the operation, he claims, scores of bandits were murdered, particularly in the late hours of September 17, 2021.
“The troops arrived at a camp suspected to be the location where Maj CL Datong was being held. At the camp, the troops exchanged fire with the bandits and overwhelmed them with superior fire.
In the process, the gallant troops were able to rescue the abducted officer. However, the officer sustained a minor injury but he has been treated in a medical facility and handed over to NDA for further action,” he said
He praised the NAF, DSS, Nigerian Police, and “patriotic Nigerians” for their essential assistance, which he said contributed to the operation’s success.
In other news, Professor Abass Olajire, a lecturer at the Ladoke Akintola University of Technology (LAUTECH), has died.
Late Olajire slumped and died while worshipping inside a mosque on Friday, September 17, according to a statement made by the school PRO, Lekan Fadeyi.
“He slumped at the Ansarul Deen Mosque, Stadium Road and was confirmed dead at the LAUTECH Teaching Hospital” he said
The professor was declared dead at the LAUTECH teaching hospital, according to Fadeyi.
Olajire is a graduate of Obafemi Awolowo University and the University of Ibadan, and joined Ladoke Akintola University of Technology as an assistant lecturer in 1990.
