We have sighted a document that revealed that all contact sports in schools have been banned indefinitely in South Africa.

The decision was taken by the Council of Education Ministers, and per the statement, all non-contact sports instruction in schools can continue as long as all safety standards are followed.

According to the council, contact sports activities continue to contribute to the spread of the deadly COVID-19 disease.

An educational activist, Hendrick Makaneta said;

“The fact that several schools are currently closed owing to many occurrences of Covid-19 is enough cause for the need to ban school sporting activities. The government should immediately halt all school sporting activities.”

The statement released by the council partly reads;

“The Council of Education Ministers has taken the decision to suspend all contact sports in schools with immediate effect. The decision was taken in a virtual meeting held this morning.

Non-contact training in schools can continue provided that all social distancing, hygiene and safety measures are observed and that there is no physical contact between participants during training.

In 2021, after the reopening of schools and consultations with educational stakeholders, the DBE gazetted directions allowing non-contact sport, sports related activities and school-based art and cultural activities to resume without spectators, subject to adherence of safety measure.”
