The Bakassi Boys have come back to the South East many years after they were disbanded.

According to DailyTrust, the vigilante group was spotted in Awka in two vans, singing and sending strict warnings to criminals.

A source told the publication:

“The boys came mainly for alleged cult groups which have taken over Awka town in recent time without any response from the Police. I think they were invited by traders.”

According to the publication, when the state’s Police Public Relations Officer, Ikenga Tochukwu, was contacted he stated that he was unaware of the development. The PPRO, on the other hand, stated that the police are willing to collaborate with any security stakeholder.

According to a Senior Police Officer who talked to DailyTrust on the condition of anonymity, some security guys came in the state but could not confirm whether they were deployed by the government.

The source said,

“That is the only thing I can tell you, for now. Let’s see how things work out in the days and weeks to come.”

Bakassi Boys have a history of carrying out unlawful killings.

In other news, men of the Kaduna State Police Command have prevented a robbery attack and recovered ammunition and an operational vehicle.

“The hoodlums on sighting the Police patrol vehicle, started shooting berserkly. The Officers involved were very tactical in response and their operational sagacity succeeded in repelling the attack. They recovered twenty four (24) rounds of live 7.62 x 39mm ammunitions; thirty (30) polymer-cased 12-guage shotgun shells; a Toyota Corolla LE, Ash colour with Reg.No. ABJ 704 MX; a driver’s license and ATM cards,” Jalige stated.

“It was a successful counteroffensive devoid of any injury to the Operatives, while the hoodlums escaped with bullet wounds considering the observed volume of blood spilled and stains at the scene.” he added.
