A Federal High Court in Lagos State sentenced a clearing agent, Cyril Ogunna, to ten years in prison for illegally importing 657.5 kilograms of tramadol.

On Friday, Justice Daniel Osiagor sentenced the convict to prison after he pleaded guilty to two counts of conspiracy and unlawful tramadol importation brought by the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency.

Mrs. Lily Wifa-Aranyeli, an NDLEA prosecutor, told the court that Ogunna was arrested with the drug on December 1, 2021, at ESS Libra, Bonded Terminal, Ikorodu, Lagos, which had been illegally brought into the country from India.

The defendant did not deny the allegations because he pleaded guilty to them, and due to the fact that he admitted to wrongdoing, the prosecutor requested that he should be sentenced.

Mr. G. O. Okaka, his counsel, urged the court to balance justice with mercy. The convict was sentenced to ten years in prison by Justice Osiagor.

The judge, however, gave him the option of paying a N500,000 fine instead of going to jail. He also ordered that the tramadol that had been seized be destroyed.
