Lawyer and activist Inibehe Effiong has condemned the government move to freeze the bank accounts of EndSARS protesters and promoters.

This is in reaction to the order obtained by the Central Bank Nigeria to freeze the accounts of about 20 individuals and organizations that played significate roles in the EndSARS protest.

According to reports, the order was granted by Justice Ahmed Mohammed with the court addressing the head offices of Fidelity Bank, Access Bank, First Bank Nigeria, Guaranty Trust Bank, United Bank of Africa and Zenith Bank.

Amongst those affected are Bolatito Racheal Oduala, Chima David Ibebunjoh, Mary Doose Kpengwa, Saadat Temitope Bibi, Bassey Victor Israel, Wisdom Busaosowo Obi, Nicholas Ikhalea Osazele, Ebere Idibie, Akintomide Lanre Yusuf, Uhuo Ezenwanyi Promise and Mosopefoluwa Odeseye.

An organization like Gatefield Nigeria Limited, owners of Gatefield Co, who provided funds for journalists to support the coverage of the protests also has its Access Bank account frozen.

Effiong, has described the action taken by the Federal Government as an act of hypocrisy.

He stated;

“The government gave the impression that it wants to attend to the demands of the protesters. The President and the Vice president pleaded with the young people to suspend the protest and called for a dialogue. For us to now see the same government arresting people, freezing accounts…”
