According to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), it has been able to make over 2000 convictions within nine months.

It was also revealed that cybercrime convictions accounted for 1,968 convicts which are more than 73% of all convictions.

Convictions for cybercrime range from fraud, embezzlement, misappropriation, internet fraud, and other financial impropriety committed in the public and private sectors both within and outside the country.

The convictions were obtained between January and October 7, 2022, according to the anti-corruption agency.

The 1,968 cybercrime convicts were involved in a variety of internet fraud schemes, including identity theft, phishing, malware attacks, bank fraud vishing, and credit card scams.

It described the rise in cybercrime activities in Nigeria as alarming and concerning, and stated that it would leave no stone unturned in combating the threat.

According to the commission, cybersecurity experts believe that financial damages and losses could reach $6 trillion by the end of the year, and studies have shown that cyber attacks are among the fastest growing crimes worldwide.

In August of this year, the EFCC held a four-day cybercrime and crypto-currency investigation training for its operatives in collaboration with the US Department of Justice.
