Nigeria’s professional football clubs voted to end this season due to the coronavirus pandemic, making Plateau United, Enyimba, and Rivers United Plateau to qualify for continental competitions.

On Monday, chairman of the clubs owners, Isaac Danladi declared that, “The 2019/2020 season has been brought to a halt because of the prevailing circumstances, that is the COVID-19 pandemic, which has ravaged all parts of the world”.

He said out of the 20 topflight teams, 17 of them had agreed to finish the season with calculated final placings on points per game basis and no relegation.

Plateau United and Enyimba will claim the two CAF Champions League slots and Rivers United will join in the CAF Confederation Cup, that’s what the calculation means.

The club owners chairman, who also runs Nasarawa United, said it was “too early” to fix a definitive date for the kick-off of next season.

This step is not the first time that the Nigerian Premier League has been terminated ahead of schedule.

Two seasons ago, the league ended with 15 rounds to go so with the aim of beating the deadline set by CAF to present clubs for continental competitions.

Nigerian authorities have imposed many restrictions to try to contain the coronavirus, which to date has caused 20,244 confirmed infections and 518 deaths.
