When some journalists in the country claimed that Hon. Elvis Afriyie Ankrah had purchased a coconut for $100 during the 2014 World Cup in Brazil, the former minister for youth and sports, declared that the claims were entirely false and absurd.

He said in an interview watched by Ghgossip.com. “There was no issue about coconut, I drank the normal coconut. Coconut is less than $1.”

The former minister claimed that a piece of coconut cost about $1 at the time of the competition, leaving him perplexed as to how media came up with the $100 unit pricing for coconut.

Mr. Afriyie Ankrah also disclosed that these false reports against him were created merely because certain individuals decided to discredit him since they believed he was growing so popular.

He said that some journalists were bought off with cars, while others were paid to malign him.

He revealed; “There was no issue about coconut, I drank the normal coconut. Other officials and I were sitting down drinking coconut, the next morning I saw it on the front page of one newspaper that we have gone to buy coconut, some were quoting $200.It was absolutely rubbish.”

Coconut is less than $1. It was after the tournament I realized some journalists were contracted to tarnish my image. They bought them cars…one of them was given money six times to go after me. Later the person came to apologize to me.”
