Dr. Clement Apaak, a high-ranked member of the parliament’s select committee on education is in support of the call for national stakeholders to engage in the review of the Free SHS(FSHS) policy by the National Association of Graduate Teachers(NAGRAT).

The policy which has been in action for a while in his opinion needs a stakeholders dialogue.

“It is time for us to have a national dialogue on making the free SHS policy better. The government has demonstrated that it is incapable of addressing
the challenges faced with the rollout of the policy. Because challenges still exist with the Free SHS policy, it is important we hold the dialogue”. He said.

The member of parliament for the Builsa South Constituency further added that “Many of our schools are now working with the Parent-Teacher Association in the background to support them”.

He said that one of the major problems of the FSHS policy is the round-the-clock issues concerning infrastructural challenges and funding and this really affects the education of students.

He also said that the members of the parliamentary committee on education have always been raising alarms on the budget and proposals of the FSHS policy “but the committee chair has never heard us or called on the Minister of Education to address these concerns”.
“When parliament resumes from recess, the sector minister will definitely be summoned to answer questions on the deficiencies of the policy and the way forward”.

The National Association of Graduate Teachers organized a conference on the 1st of May, 2021 which marked the May Day celebrations and they used the medium to call for the stakeholders’ dialogue to review the FSHS policy.

“The fact is Free SHS policy goes beyond the payment or non-payment of fees, but also the survival of the general school system”. – Eric Cabonu, President of NAGRAT.
