Being a politician in Ghana has several benefits, including a substantial income and a long list of benefits like offices, ex-gratia, housing, and travel allowances.

Former president of Ghana, John Agyekum Kufuor, claimed that he entered politics to help the people of Ghana, not to become wealthy.

When asked why he ventured into politics, former President John Agyekum Kufuor said, “I didn’t go into politics for money.”

“Monetization of politics these days, people speak so much about money these days, they make it look like people go into politics to get money,” the NPP pioneer said.

“Now, I don’t believe that commitment is the same,” Kufuor remarked.

In addition, Kufuor acknowledged that the New Patriotic Party (NPP) was fragmenting more and blamed it on the emergence of factionalism inside the organization.

We believe th at, at least in practice, the commitment to liberal democratic values is not as strong as it was in 1992.

Kufuor opined there seems to be too much talk about factionalism, he informs the crowd. If you wanted a democratic environment to be fair, you wouldn’t encourage factions.

In his view, if the method of identifying voting places, organizational committees, constituencies, or nations is eliminated, there will be less polarization and emphasis on factions.

We believe that, at least in practice, the commitment to liberal democratic values is not as strong as it was in 1992.

It’s almost like a religion today, he said. “The way I feel it, I don’t perceive the same deep dedication”
