Late President Jerry John Rawlings made his present felt on the political scene in May 1979 when he attempted an unsuccessful coup.
While he was on trial, on June 4, 1979, his fellow junior officers of the Ghanaian Armed Forces staged another coup that removed him from the powers that be.
That military junta, the Revolutionary Council of the Armed Forces (AFRC) ran the country for about 112 days before handing it over to Dr. Hilla Limann, the only president of the short-lived Fourth Republic of Ghana on September 27, 1979.

He took up the gun again to overthrow Dr. Limann on December 31, 1981, forming the Provisional Defense Council (PNDC).

Rawlings ruled the country as president of the PNDC for 11 years, before becoming a Democratic leader when he won the 1992 and 1996 elections on the National Democratic Congress (NDC) list.
