Pollster, Ben Ephson has suggested that 2024 will confirm or otherwise the belief that New Patriotic Party (NPP) only use Northerners for their electoral caprices as the party has no room for non-Akans.

Ben Ephson said it’s the next election year that the Northern side of the country will get to know whether the party holds them in high esteem or just use them as believed in the 2024 polls.

His comment comes on the back of Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia being tipped as a favorite to be the flagbearer of the party in 2024. However, since the party has always projected itself as an Akan party, Alan Kyeremanten is allegedly in line to succeed Nana Akufo Addo.

Speaking on Joy FM, Mr. Ephson said “If NPP settles for another Akan, there is going to be that feeling from persons from the Northern regions who have been voting for the NPP that the NPP uses and dumps them especially when the late Aliu Mahama (may he rest in peace) got less than 7 percent in the 2007 presidential race of the NPP.

So that could lead the people to think that they only use them for votes and judging from 2020, the Northern regions gave the NPP quite a fair number of seats”.

In a related development, a group calling itself Concerned Northern Grassroots of the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) has asked the Majority leader in Parliament, Osei Kyei-Mensah to resign.

The group is incensed that the leading NPP member could say no Akan should be given the flagbearership slot leading to the 2024 general elections. Osei Kyei-Mensah merely suggested that the NPP elects a flagbearer who is non-Akan to lead them into election 2024 because it had had two Akan leaders in John Agyekum Kufour and President Akufo-Addo.

However, the group in a press conference disagreed with the position of the Majority leader saying “This, we find very worrying because all sophisticated politicians, party members and citizens know very well that a lot of variables play in a dynamic political marketing context to determine the most favourable candidate to win an election.”
