A novelty song is a comical or nonsensical song, performed principally for its comical effect. Novelty songs achieved great popularity during the 1920s and 1930s. They had a resurgence of interest in the 1950s and 1960s.

Right after Stonebwoy dropped his banger, ‘Putuu’, which Ghanaians can’t have enough of, we decided to make a compilation of similar songs which has become a hot commodity and drive people to the dancefloor like crazy. Indeed, these are songs we can’t stop jamming to.

1. Putuu- Stonebwoy
Stonebwoy’s Putuu is making waves all over the country days after it got leaked to the public domain. Apparently, the Bhim Nation boss did not want to commercialize the song as it clearly was a freestyle but in sudden twist of fate, Putuu has become the most trending song in Ghana now since it crawled it way out.
Although a section of Ghanaians who are dependent on content-themed songs have criticised Stonebwoy, the Dancehall artiste has firmly explained that he’s unfazed by the minority’s opinion. He recently told Luv FM in an interview that they can only bash him if they can explain the tongues they say in church before they demand an explanation for the lyrics in his song.
‘Music chose me so whatever it tells me to say, I say it. I can say the unknown language you are hearing I think it’s tongues-speaking because I am praying,’ Stonebwoy said. He further explained music is spirit and language that has no barrier hence the acceptance of East and South African songs in Ghana despite the language used.
Whichever perspective you look at it however, Putuu has come to stay and the humour it transmits alone is enough to drag you to the dancefloor.
2. Mans Not Hot- Big Shaq
UK-Based Ghanaian comedian and rapper, Michael Dapaah aka Big Shaq stunned the world with his monster hit Mans Not Hot comedy-filled song. The catchy verse, ‘Two plus two is four/Minus one that’s three, quick maths,’ Big Shaq uses his intelligence to user the listener to his world of pun, rhyme and parallelism woven in witty way. Then by saying ‘when the ting went quack-quack-quack, you men were ducking,’ he manages to have not one, but two duck references in one line which etched his name in the rap game for a long period of time.
3. One Corner- Patapaa
One Corner was a global hit. The popularity of the song spread like wildfire in the hazy harmattan season. It’s Patapaa’s major hit song till this day. The lyrics and the rhythm of the song don’t make sense at all, yet Ghanaians, Nigerians, Liberians and other African countries jam to it like nobody’s business. Admittedly there’s something freaky about that song which will instantly move you to the dancefloor despite having no depth. The song was released in 2017.
4. Freedom- Shatta Wale
Definitely Wale has to be here. He’s a master of such songs which he calls commercial songs. Don’t get me wrong, Shatta Wale is a great artiste who has a lot of profound and good songs to his credit. He confessed that throwing ‘silly’ songs ‘into the mix’ is a clever way of staying relevant as Ghanaians love danceable tunes. The song interestingly has only two dominant words, ‘freedom’ and ‘Shatta Wale.’
5. Kpuu kpan- Wisa Gried
Former Black Avenue Muzik signee, Wisa Gried released this song in 2016. After announcing his presence with his smash hit ‘Ekiki Me’ ft Sarkodie, Wisa Gried stormed back with this song which was delivered in his local dialect- Ga. This song is interspersed with profanity and clever wordplay which you wouldn’t allow your child sing along if you understand exactly what Wisa Gried is trying to put across.
