John Raymond Henry Funeral, Burial, Obituary, Memorial Service – American sculptor John Raymond Henry was born in 1943. Henry’s sculpture has been compared by many to enormous welded steel drawings.
He graduated from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago with a BFA in 1969. From 1978 to 1980, he served as chairman and president of ConStruct.
Over the course of his life, he won numerous prizes for his creations, including the Kentucky Governor’s National Award and the Chattanooga Mayor’s Award of Distinction in the Arts.
The idea for Sculpture Fields was developed by John and his wife Pamela while John’s studio was located in Chattanooga. A grass-roots movement to establish an international sculpture park, which opened in 2016, was spearheaded by them.
It was claimed that John Henry contributed to the legacy of Chattanooga’s forward-thinking pioneers by enhancing the neighborhood’s cultural life.
Internationally, John Henry is best known for his colossal abstract sculptures made of welded steel beams and intersecting monoliths.
He constructs each sculpture in his studio, doing everything from the engineering to the welding to the balancing of the delicately arranged linear and planar-colored steel pieces.
John’s artwork is on display all over the world, including in public spaces and at the entrances to international corporate headquarters.
He once told Nashville Arts Magazine in 2015 that he preferred to think of himself more as a builder than a sculptor in response to a question about his work. He compared the language of the builder to the language of the artist, who prefers inner perception and intuition to literary vocabulary.
