In 1969, he received a BFA from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. He was ConStruct’s president and chairman from 1978 to 1980.
He received numerous awards for his works over the course of his life, including the Mayor’s Award of Distinction in the Arts in the City of Chattanooga and the Kentucky Governor’s National Award.
John’s wife, Pamela, and he came up with the concept for Sculpture Fields when John’s studio was in Chattanooga. They were the driving force behind a grass-roots movement to create an international sculpture park, which debuted in 2016.
John Henry was said to have improved the cultural life of the neighborhood, adding to the legacy of Chattanooga’s forward-thinking pioneers.
John Henry is best known internationally for his enormous abstract sculptures made of intersecting monoliths and welded steel beams.
He builds every one of his sculptures in his studio, doing everything from the engineering to the welding to the placement of the linear and planar colored steel pieces in delicately balanced arrangements.
All over the world, including in public places and at the entrances to global corporate headquarters, John’s artwork is on display.
In 2015, he responded to a question about his work by telling Nashville Arts Magazine that he preferred to think of himself more as a builder than a sculptor. He compared the terms used by builders to those used by artists who favor intuition and inner vision over literary vocabulary.

John Raymond Henry’s death has not yet been given a cause, as of this writing. He passed away in his Brooksville, Florida, home.
In response to Henry’s passing, Jay Heavilon, a board member of the Sculpture Fields at Montague Park, said;
“As the Board of Trustees of Sculpture Fields at Montague Park, will miss John’s drive, determination, clear eye for quality and his leadership and feel a responsibility for maintaining the legacy of his life’s work by maintaining the huge mark he has left on the City of Chattanooga.”
