It’s become seemingly impossible for John Dramani Mahama to win the 2020 polls despite the huge disappointment of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) led by Nana Akufo Addo.

There have been many job losses since the NPP took over in 2017. In May to August 2018, not less than 10,285 job losses were recorded, the highest unemployment rate in the history of Ghana, within that period. So basically if we are going to talk about achievements and why John Mahama should come back, then we have enough data to substantiate this stance.

Despite how hard the Nana Akufo led administration is trying hard to hold on to power through the manipulation of the Electoral Commission evident in the contentious voters’ registration which commenced despite the threat Covid-19 possesses, the majority of Ghanaians think NPP’s time is up.

If the veil of propaganda is thrown and the argument leveled on the same wavelength, then John Dramani Mahama is clearly ahead of his rival Nana Akufo Addo as the combat will be reduced to track records. Ghanaians kicked the butts of the NDC led by John Dramani Maham out of power in 2016 on the basis of corruption, unemployment, and high cost of living but said they are now experiencing worse of what they experienced under John Mahama.

Against this backdrop, if the debate is limited to ‘what have you done during your tenure and why didn’t fulfill these promises’, obviously Ghanaians have to look beyond this charade of the NPP during this Covid-19 period and look at the broader picture.

If Mahama’s ‘crime’ is corruption for which reason he was voted out, then the NPP has that in abundance. Nana Addo has the biggest government size ever in the history of Ghanaian politics– 121 Ministers. This is just a smart way to milk our lean economy dry which is equivalent to corruption, don’t you think?

And when it comes to employment, the statistics are clear, President Akufo-Addo has killed more jobs than he has created if any at all.

But unfortunately for John Dramani Mahama and his National Democratic Congress (NDC), the expert way Nana Akufo Addo has handled the Covid-19 situation (although we must confess he negligently made Ghana record its share of the pandemic) has endeared him to the large populace. His timely interventions, the schemes he put in place to alleviate our suffering during the lockdown and the famous free SHS have made Ghanaians forgotten about his vast deficiencies. To this end, it’s likely Nana Akufo Addo will win the elections and secure a second term in office till he serves his constitutional mandate at the expense of familiar foe, John Dramani Mahama.

On the flipside, the NPP MPs will be beaten soundly as their NDC counterparts look poise to win the majority seats in parliament. According what we have gathered on the grounds, most of these NPP lawmakers are very arrogant and have performed badly in their various constituencies. Additionally, the recent NPP primaries where a lot of incumbent MPs lost their place to newcomers have given us this firm conviction.

Recall that right after the election, Kwame Asare Obeng, known widely as A Plus said close to 100 incumbent New Patriotic Party (NPP) Members of Parliament (MPs) would have lost the parliamentary primaries if the party had not protected 65 Members of Parliament from the competition by making them run unopposed.

In all, 40 incumbent MPs were kicked out. If they had not forced 65 incumbent MPs on the people by asking them to run unopposed, there would’ve been close to 100 casualties,’ he had argued on Facebook. So there you have it, there’s a dose of good news for both two political parties. Do you agree with the writer on this? Let’s know what you think in the comment section below.
