Let’s honestly admit this, Iwan used to be the best (and he still is) the Dancehall artiste in Ghana before the emergence of Shatta Wale and Stonebwoy.
If you are a true music fanatic whose sense of reasoning is not clouded by prejudice, then we think you should give him his due whilst recognizing the echelon he occupies as far the hierarchy of the Dancehall genre is concerned.
It’s unfortunate that his career took a nosedive when he parted company with his then manager, Bulldog. Iwan spoke to Zylofon FM just some few hours ago which we monitored.
During the chit-chat on the radio station with Sammy Flex, Iwan whose real name is Abdul Razak Issahaku spoke highly of his accomplishments when he was in the limelight and we think everything that he said shouldn’t be premised on the label ‘bragging’; he spoke nothing but the truth.
His statement aptly defines one of the famous proverbs from Chinua Achebe’s Things Fall Apart which states that the lizard that jump from the high Irokko tree says he would praise himself if no else did.
Anyway, here’s all that he said:
I want to big up 55 and Apietus for paving the way with “African Girls”. So if I hear people saying they brought dancehall to Ghana, I feel it’s irritating. Just like I can’t say I brought dancehall you can’t also say you brought dancehall.
Before that, there wasn’t any dancehall song that was bigger than “who is bad” and Iwan song. If there is any song they should prove it to me. I brought main stream English, reggea and original dancehall and they all took off.
Just recently, Iwan’s former manager, Bulldog reinforced the point that I raised in my introductory paragraph that he’s the best Dancehall act we have around. Bulldog expressed regret for parting ways with such a talented person as Iwan.
He said:
….I have learnt painful lessons. I can sit here and say that Iwan is the most prolific reggae/dancehall artistes in Ghana. My inexperience at the time made me cut my glory short. Because when he messed up with me I forgot that he was supposed to come through me to be great…
Iwan won the ‘Reggae Song of the Year’ at the 2011Vodafone Ghana Music Awards. In a chat with ghgossip.com just before this publication, Iwan confirmed that he indeed had the interview with Sammy Flex and assured his fans that he’s coming up with more hot tunes soon.
