Ghanaians are not happy that the police have not invited the Member of Parliament (MP) for Awutu Senya East, Ms Mavis Hawa Koomson over her Rambo style exhibition at one of the registration centres in her constituency after she pulled a gun and fired some shots.

Ms Koomson who is also the Minister of Special Development Initiatives had told Adom TV immediately after the nasty incident that she was compelled to fire the shots because she felt threatened and besides there were no police officers around to protect her.

Ms Hawa justified her action further by saying she went to the centre after receiving information that people from outside the constituency were bussed to register there as voters which is against the law. She said this information was relayed to her by a reliable informant and upon the third call she had from the same person on different days, she decided to storm the place on Monday. Ms Mavis Hawa Koomson said upon reaching one of the registration centres, she noticed some hoodlums (apparently) on motorbikes who were ready to cause mayhem.

She stressed that she felt her people’s life and that of hers were in danger, so she fired the warning shots in an attempt to scare them. ‘I didn’t direct it at anybody,’ she added and explained she did not have her police escort with her at the time. She further said her gunshots were aimed at dispersing the chaotic scene. The incident reportedly occurred at the centre situated at the Step to Christ polling station. Reports indicate there were other gunshots apart from the one from Hawa Koomson.

Some motorbikes were burnt at the centre and EC officials at the centre were attacked as well during the confusion which disrupted the registration process for a while. The police have arrested four people in connection with the disturbances but the fact that the minister herself has not been invited to aid in investigation has attracted scores of reactions on social media.
