It’s official now, that Nana Akufo Addo won’t receive any form of endorsement from these important figures of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) namely Lawyer Philip Addison and Joseph Kofi Damtse.

How did we arrive at this consensus? These two, who are all aspiring lawmakers, were given a raw deal during the NPP primaries which took place a few weeks ago.

The pain and anger they habour since the hierarchy of the party literally bundled them out has made them sever all associations with the elephant party. As a matter of fact, they heading towards the 2020 polls as independent candidates after they were cunningly undermined at the expense of other candidates who are preferred by the bigwigs of the party. Let’s see what led to their decisions.

From the forgoing, their supporters, friends, and family members- both the nuclear and extended families will not vote for Nana Akufo Addo as a way of registering their displeasure perhaps to forestall a similar occurrence in the future. So what exactly happened and why are the aforementioned going as independent candidates? Let’s check the history below.

Philip Addison

A frustrated Philip Addison reportedly denounced his New Patriotic Membership and decided to go as an independent candidate for Akuapem North Constituency after series of sabotage he was subjected to before and during the NPP’s primaries.

His posters and new matra have since surfaced all over the constituency, copies of which have been made available online. It has been gathered that some influential functionaries of the party are strongly behind him and have urged him to go for the seat as an independent candidate.

Philip Addison took this bold step after Dr. Twumasi was disqualified to contest the Akuapem North primaries, for frivolous reasons, leading to agitations and tensions among the constituency and polling center executives, with some accusing the presidency of masterminding that since the MP’s father plays a key role in the seat of government.

Mr Addison’s move is contrary to a stern warning issued by the National Organizer of the party Sammi Awuku who said immediately after the primaries that any person who does not obey the party’s rules and regulations will be expelled from the party. ‘There are a lot of sanctions against such persons. One of it is forfeiting your membership or expulsion from the party, he had revealed. The leadership further warned that it would physically prevent persons who were either disqualified or defeated to go independent.

Joseph Kofi Damtse

In the case of, Joseph Kofi Damtse he was disqualified as the parliamentary aspirant of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the Assin South Constituency. He bluntly said some stalwarts of the NPP party sabotaged and denied him the chance to contest Rev. John Ntim Fodjour, the incumbent Member of Parliament (MP).

Right after his disqualification, Mr. Damtse told GNA that the resolve by the Party executives to protect the sitting MP has grossly affected Party unity and cohesion among the rank and file.

‘Some so-called faceless big-men within the Party I have toiled and supported for decades think I don’t deserve to represent them in Parliament, hence their unflinching determination to disqualify me at all cost. I am ready to contest as an independent candidate, after all, they say I am not a member of the Party for reasons best known to them,” he said.

Again, he was worried that the Party had failed woefully to officially inform him of the reasons for his unjustifiable disqualification having contested in the Parliamentary primaries since the year 2008. ‘I am disappointed that my Party, believed to be the icon of democracy in Ghana has failed to officially inform me about the reasons for my disqualification,’ he said angrily.
