After having a successful high school basketball career in British Columbia, Nash received a scholarship to Santa Clara University in California.
During his four seasons with the Broncos, when the team made three NCAA tournament appearances, he was twice named the West Coast Conference (WCC) Player of the Year.
Nash suffers from spondylolisthesis, a medical condition that causes muscle tightness and back pain.

Nash was born in Johannesburg, South Africa, on February 7, 1974, to Welsh mother Jean and English father John.
When Steve Nash was about 18 months old, his family moved to Regina, Saskatchewan. Eventually, though, they settled in Victoria, British Columbia.
Before the family moved to Canada, his father, who was born in London’s Tottenham neighborhood, traveled the world as a professional soccer player.

Being a citizen of both Canada and the United Kingdom gives Steve Nash dual citizenship. Nash enjoyed playing hockey and soccer with his younger brother Martin a lot, but he didn’t start playing basketball until he was 12 or 13 years old.
He didn’t start playing basketball until he was a teenager, but he was determined to succeed, promising his mother that when he was in eighth grade, he would play in the NBA and become a star.
His neighbors were NHL players Russ and Geoff Courtnall, who once watched him and played soccer for Nash’s father.
Nash had previously attended Mount Douglas Secondary School in Saanich, British Columbia, but after his grades began to slip, his parents made the decision to transfer him to St. Michaels University School, a private boarding school in Victoria.
He participated in rugby union, soccer, and the NBA there. For the basketball team in his senior year, Nash had career-high scoring, assist, and rebounding averages of 21.3, 11.2, and 9.1, respectively.
In 1991–1992, the year he led his squad to the British Columbia AAA provincial championship triumph, he was named the province’s Player of the Year.
