Outspoken Ghanaian politician and son of Ghana’s first President, Sekou Nkrumah has humbly begged the government of Ghana to expunge the name of Kotoka from Ghana’s premier international airport.

Major General Emmanuel Kwasi Kotoka was a member of the ruling National Liberation Council which came to power in Ghana in a military coup d’état on 24 February 1966. This overthrew the government of Dr. Kwame Nkrumah.

Obviously, from the perspective of Mr Sekou, a man who overthrew his father, shouldn’t have been given this befitting acknowledgement with his name attached to Ghana’s International Airport.
Historically, the Accra International Airport was renamed Kotoka International Airport in 1969 in honour of Lieutenant General Emmanuel Kwasi Kotoka and this is something that has been contested by a lot of people who share Nkrumah’s ideologies and want to preserve his legacy.
Sekou Nkrumah emphasized that his call for the removal of Kotoka’s name was to do with the image of Nkrumah, saying, “Here’s a man seen by black people everywhere as a champion of Africa, and yet some of his people have no regards for his memory!”
